You’re probably wondering why Health and Wellness made the cut as a main theme of this blog. To be honest, a year ago it wouldn’t have.
In April of 2011, I was diagnosed with diabetes. Talk about a trip. There I was, feeling pretty good about life. I had lost some weight (not that I was ever terribly overweight, just carrying around a little extra chunk in the middle), down to 150lbs from a high of 180 a few years prior.
Then I started getting up in the night to pee. And I was thirsty all the time. And I lost 10lbs in 2 weeks without doing anything….at that point I hit the ER and sure enough, my sugars were out of control.
After the doctor shook his head a little bit, he told me I had diabetes (which I already knew..thanks Google…). Of course, I didn’t fit the typical profile for Type 2 Diabetes, nor did I fit the “Insulin dependant, juvenile onset Type 1 variety”. So what was going on? Being a keen learner, I hit the web, bought some books and realized that the Diabetes Associations were not taking a hard enough line with the diet of diabetics. More about my journey with diabetes here. And you should check out the page on the paleo diet and what’s wrong with the typical North American diet here.
The moral of the story…don’t wait for your pancreas to start shutting down to stop eating sugar!
